📚 Library Storytimes & Free Weekly Kids' Events in Athens, GA

Some weeks the hard part of parenting a preschooler here isn't finding something to do — it's remembering what happens on which day. So we built the cheat sheet. Below is a Monday-through-Saturday rundown of the standing kids' events around town, with ages and costs, and a library storytime in Athens, GA anchors most of the weekday mornings. Nearly everything on this list is free; the priciest thing on it is $12.

One honest caveat up front: these programs run in seasons. Library storytime breaks between sessions, the nature center runs four-week blocks, and the farmers market changes hours in January. Treat this as the shape of a normal week, then check our calendar for what's actually happening the week you're reading it.

Where is library storytime in Athens, GA, and what does it cost?

Three area library branches run free weekly programs for young kids: the main Athens-Clarke County Library at 2025 Baxter Street, Pinewoods Library & Learning Center at 1465 Hwy 29 North, and the Bogart Library at 200 South Burson Avenue. All of it is free. Only Pinewoods requires registration.

That's the backbone of the week. Here's how it lays out day by day, with the non-library regulars mixed in.

Monday

Storytime with Miss Harli — Bogart Library, 10:30–11:30 a.m., free, ages 3 to 7. The Oconee-side option, and the longest of the area's storytimes at a full hour: songs, letters, language play, stories and a STEAM activity, with playtime afterward so kids and grown-ups can stick around. Worth the drive if you're in Watkinsville or west Athens.

Open Playtime — Athens-Clarke County Library, 10:30 a.m.–noon, free. Not a program — just the storytime room with age-appropriate toys set out and no expectation that anyone sits still. It's the free, air-conditioned answer to a long morning with a baby or toddler, and it's where a lot of Athens parents meet each other. Monday is the school-year day; in summer it also runs Tuesday and Wednesday, plus a 6–7 p.m. Monday evening session.

Little Explorers Learn and Grow / Los Pequeños Exploradores — Pinewoods, 10–11 a.m., free, ages 2 to 4. A bilingual English/Spanish early-learning play program that runs four mornings a week, Monday through Thursday. Space is limited and registration is required in advance — call 706-613-3708.

Tuesday

Storytime — Athens-Clarke County Library, 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., free, all ages. The main library's twice-weekly storytime: stories, songs, puppets and movement for kids and caregivers. The smart part is that the two sessions are identical, so you pick the one that survives your nap schedule instead of rearranging the morning around the library. The fall session resumes September 1, 2026.

Little Explorers — Pinewoods, 10–11 a.m., free, ages 2 to 4. Same bilingual program, registration required.

Toddler Tuesday — Georgia Museum of Art, 10–10:40 a.m., free, 18 months to 3 years. Monthly, not weekly, and built specifically for the youngest museumgoers: a storytime, some close looking at a single work in the galleries, then an art project in the studio classroom. Forty minutes, which is exactly the right length. Registration is required so the museum can keep the chaperone ratio and the supplies right.

Wednesday

Storytime — Athens-Clarke County Library, 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., free, all ages. The week's second library storytime, same two-session format.

Little Explorers — Pinewoods, 10–11 a.m., free, ages 2 to 4.

Knee High Naturalists — Sandy Creek Nature Center, 3:30–4:30 p.m., ages 3 to 5 with an adult. A preschool nature series in multi-week seasonal sessions — the fall session runs September 9–30, 2026. Staff take small groups out onto the property to explore and become "green naturalists." It's $12 for ACC residents and $18 for non-residents for the whole session, with a 10% discount for nature center members, and preregistration is required. If the session is full, the nature center itself is free to visit Tuesday through Saturday, and the trails are open sunrise to sunset every day.

Wednesday Farmers Market — Creature Comforts Brewing Co., 5–8 p.m., March through November, free. The weekday version of the Athens Farmers Market, in the brewery's outdoor space downtown, with live music from 6–8 p.m. This is the after-work, before-dinner move: they run around, you get produce and something prepared for supper, nobody cooks.

Thursday

Sweet Pea Club — Alice H. Richards Children's Garden at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, 10:15–11 a.m., $3 per participating child, ages 3 to 5. The Garden's weekly preschool nature program, with songs, puppets, stories and games on a rotating theme — busy bees, parts of plants, decomposers, plants we eat. Register online. It's held outdoors in the children's garden, so the exact spot can shift with the weather.

Little Explorers — Pinewoods, 10–11 a.m., free, ages 2 to 4. The last of the four bilingual mornings.

123 Toddler & Me — Lay Park Community Center, 10–11 a.m., $3 ACC resident / $4.50 non-resident, ages 2 to 5. Roughly twice a month on Thursdays, rotating between art fun, gym games and kitchen "snack fun." Fall 2026 dates include September 3, September 17, October 1 and October 8. Lay Park is the county's closest rec center to downtown, which makes this an easy one to squeeze in. Registration goes through the Leisure Services online system.

Read to Rover — Bogart Library, 4–5 p.m., free. Third Thursday of the month. Kids read aloud to Maisy Jane and other gentle therapy dogs. It's aimed at prereaders and early readers who need a patient, non-judgmental audience, and a dog is very good at being both.

Friday

Fantastic Friday Open Gym — Bishop Park Gymnastics Center, 10–11:30 a.m., ages 10 months to 4 years. Most Fridays through the fall season, in the county's full gymnastics facility. An instructor supervises, but you lead your own kid through the obstacle courses and equipment, and an adult has to stay with the child the whole time. It's $7.50 for ACC residents and $11.25 for non-residents. Important: advance online registration only, no same-day walk-ins. Do not drive over on a whim.

Saturday

Athens Farmers Market — Bishop Park, 8 a.m.–noon March through December (9 a.m.–1 p.m. in January and February), free. The flagship Saturday market: produce, eggs, meats, baked goods, prepared food, flowers and handmade art, with live music in two sets. For kids, the draw is the free Kids Booth, which runs every week with rotating hands-on activities — nature crafts, veggie stamping, paper marbling, plant exploration. Park beside the pavilion, or use the overflow gravel lot by the tennis courts off Sunset Drive.

Family Day — Georgia Museum of Art, 10 a.m.–noon, free, all ages. One Saturday a month, and the museum has been doing it since 1986. Each one takes a theme from a current exhibition and pairs gallery activities with a hands-on art project, plus a self-guided activity brochure and a photo booth. Museum admission is free every day, so there's no cost to wander afterward.

Family Saturday Art Workshops — Lyndon House Arts Center, noon–2 p.m., free, all ages. Monthly drop-in workshops where families make art together, inspired by a contemporary artist whose work is hanging in the galleries at the time. Staff encourage seeing the exhibition before or after. Upcoming 2026 dates: August 15, September 19, October 10 and November 7. Kids need an adult with them.

Children's Garden Performance Series — Theater-in-the-Woods, State Botanical Garden, 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., free, all ages. Third Saturday of the month, April through August, on the outdoor stage in the children's garden. The 2026 season ran The Studio Athens' Shrek The Musical Jr., the Rebecca Sunshine Band, Sweet Georgia Brass, The Stage Oconee and Canopy Studio.

Journey Through the Stars — Sandy Creek Nature Center planetarium, 10–11 a.m., $5 ACC resident / $8 non-resident, ages 5 and up. A monthly show in the Sky Center with rotating themes: fall constellation stories on September 19, 2026, a planet trivia game show with prizes on October 17, a Halloween show October 31, and Jason and the Argonauts in November. Everyone attending registers, including adults, and kids under 13 must come with a registered adult. Be honest with yourself about whether your child can sit in the dark for an hour.

What can we do for free with a toddler in Athens this week?

Quite a lot. Library storytime and Open Playtime at the main branch, Little Explorers at Pinewoods, Miss Harli's storytime in Bogart, Read to Rover, the Saturday market's Kids Booth, Family Day at the museum and the Lyndon House workshops are all free. Add Sweet Pea Club at $3 and you've filled a week for pocket change.

Schedules shift — check before you load the car

None of these run 52 weeks a year. Library storytime runs in sessions with breaks between them, Knee High Naturalists is a four-week block, the performance series is April through August, the Wednesday market is March through November, and Fantastic Friday and the Pinewoods program both require advance registration.
