Will your child be at risk for
low self-esteem, bullying, drugs, violence or other common youth
problems? The Search Institute of Minneapolis, an independent, nonprofit,
nonsectarian organization seeking to advance the well-being of adolescents
and children by generating knowledge and promoting its application,
has identified the following building blocks of healthy development
that help young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.
Following each asset is the percentage of young people who experience
each asset from a survey of almost 100,000 6th- to 12th- grade youth
in 213 towns and cities in the United States.
Support
1. Family Support. Family life provides high levels of love and
support. 64%
2. Positive family communication. Young person and his or her parent(s)
communicate positively, and young person is willing to seek advice
and counsel from parent(s). 26%
3. Other adult relationships.Young person receives support from
three or more non-parent adults. 41%
4. Caring neighborhood.Young person experiences caring neighbors.
