Artist Trading Cards at ACC Library
Throughout September
Artist Trading Cards:
The Young Adult Department has an Artist Trading Card (otherwise known as ATC's) wall. Trading ATC's is fun! Here's what you do:

- Find a 3.5 by 2.5 inch card (ask for one at the YA desk if you stop by the library).
- Create a work of original art: drawing, painting, collage, or mixed media.
- Fnd a card that you like on the wall, and exchange your card for it.

National Library Card Month

It's National Library Card month!
Library cards are free and there is no age limit. To celebrate National Library Card month, any child who registers for a new library card in September at the Oconee County Library gets to choose a free book to take home. Library Fines Forgiven
Got an overdue library book? From Sunday, Aug. 22 through Monday, Sept. 6, you can return overdue Athens Regional Library System materials to any branch and have your overdue fines forgiven.

"Our goal is to cut the number of overdue library books in half," explained Athens Regional Library System Director Kathryn Ames. "We need those books back on the shelves for other people to enjoy, especially because our materials budget has been cut so severely this year."

The fine forgiveness does not include lost book fees, processing fees, damaged fees, lost card fees or collection agency referral fees. Materials returned in book drops are eligible for fine forgiveness.

The library is closed on Monday, September 6, but items in turned in via the book and media drops on Monday, Sept. 6 and still be covered by the overdue fine forgiveness.

Athens Mommies Welcome New Members Meeting

The Athens Mommies meetup group got started because of a need in the immediate Athens area for a group of diverse moms (working and not, married and single) who have little ones (sometimes big ones, too) and are looking for a playgroup that is as much for the moms as it is for the kids. The goal of Athens Mommies is to build friendships and have fun!

This meetup is designed for new and prospective members to meet the organizer and other members, find out about our meetups and ask any questions you may have. Athens Mothers' Center Morning Group
Link to Athens Mothers' Center website AMC recognizes motherhood as a demanding and important job. It offers women an opportunity to take the stress out of mothering by offering discussion and activity groups, parenting education, social events, and information about community resources in a non-judgmental, non-denominational setting.

Ashford Manor Concerts on the Lawn
Monday - September 6th - Common People Band / TBA
The Common People Band have been one of Athens Georgia's favorite party bands for over 18 years and they show why with each perfomance. The Common People Band play the classic hits from the Motown, Soul and Funk era. The Common People Band perform for wedding receptions, corporate events and college parties thoughout the South and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Gates open at 5PM to allow more time for socializing. Support artists will begin performing at 6PM with the headlining act taking the stage at 7PM. All concerts will be over by 9PM.

8th Annual Race for the Dream 5K
Race Toward the American Dream of Homeownership with the 8th Annual Race for the Dream 5k

Habitat for Humanity of Athens will hold its annual Race for the Dream 5k on Labor Day Monday, September 6th, to create awareness that the American dream of homeownership is still possible. The race begins at 8am at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, located at 1690 S. Milledge Avenue and will finish by the lake in Memorial Park. Orientation for Prospective Foster/Adoptive Parents

Have you ever thought about becoming a foster or adoptive parent but were unsure of the process or need? Foster and adoptive parents are a unique group of people who love and care for children. New foster and adoptive homes are always needed for the great number of children in foster care in Georgia.

Orientation for the DFCS certification program for prospective foster and adoptive parents (IMPACT) is offered every third Wednesday of the year at Clarke DFCS. All persons over the age of 18 in the home should attend as well. The Orientation will be held in the Conference Rooms at the back side of the DFCS Office building. Call it folk roots with a hint of country. Lowcountry rock; whatever. How about just good old harmony-driven, roots rock n' roll. With five albums under their belts, impressive independent albums sales, and a rapidly growing fan base, Stewart & Winfield are the South's answer to the No Depression, Midwestern sound. Their song-oriented music consists of strong harmony vocals and like the South itself represents a constant meshing of styles and influences that are pleasing to the ear.

Gates open at 5PM to allow more time for socializing. Support artists will begin performing at 6PM with the headlining act taking the stage at 7PM. All concerts will be over by 9PM.

Chili Cook-Off
Chili Cook-Off
Come to the premiere chili event east of Texas only at Stone Mountain Park. The Chili Cook-Off draws more than 300 teams competing for "Best Of", "People's Choice" and "Showmanship" awards in competition categories such as Chili, Brunswick Stew and Cornbread. More than $10,000 in prize money is awarded. Sample the great food and participate in a variety of contests. The event's proceeds support Camp Twin Lakes, a non-profit that offers year-round recreational, therapeutic and educational programs for children facing serious illnesses and other physical, emotional and life challenges. Price: $10 for Adults. Children 12 and under are free. Vehicle entry to Stone Mountain Park is $10 for a one-day permit or $35 for an annual permit.
